These days there are quite a number of places where you can use the internet for free. Wi-Fi hot spots are cropping up far more frequently and many hotels, bars and fast food outlets will now offer this service as a matter of course. However, because there is such thing as irony, you will often find yourself nowhere near a free Wi-Fi location when you need one most! And that in itself is a very good reason to invest in a broadband dongle for your computer.

I have been using one of these for about two years or so and I can honestly say that I’ve been thoroughly impressed. Of course, there are still odd locations around the country where it is impossible to get a signal, but to be fair these are pretty few and far between. I’ve even managed to get online whilst travelling in a car (as a passenger you will be pleased to know!) and it has also stayed connected!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

It makes you wonder why someone didn’t come up with this nifty idea even sooner. After all, USB ports are not exactly anything new, are they? These dongles really are the ideal accessory for anyone with a laptop. Those in business can look up the latest HR recruitment software or customer emails, while teenagers can use them to stream their movies or to download the hottest new songs! <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

There are plenty of wireless dongles to choose from and I am sure many of these are even better than the one that I own. Not only are they small enough to keep in your pocket, they are also very realistically priced. As far as payment plans go, they work on exactly the same principle as mobile phones. And this is the best news of all because some people will prefer pay as you go rather than having a contract.

The BBC UK website recently published online a list of ideas about what the world would be like in 100 years from now. Fascinating and in places disturbing, it featured all kinds of theories, many sounding far-fetched or implausible. Could it be possible, for example, that a person could just simply think about purchasing horse insurance and then quickly do so via the internet? Yes, according to the study, and here were a few other featured ideas which are proving quite popular right now…

1) One currency for everyone: an idea that has already gained some momentum with internet payment companies like Paypal, this one is probably going to happen. Who know how it will affect us, but one thing is for sure, it’s already on the way!

California has long aired its views that it would prefer to remain on its own…

2) Algae to produce energy: we already know how to get energy from algae, so this one just involves doing so on a much more industrial scale. We’ve done the same with oil and shale gas, so this is perfectly believable and could happen within the next 30 years.

3) Space elevators for commercial use: this one sounds surreal…a Space elevator? You start on the earth and zoom up into Space? Believe it or not, this also sounds like it could easily happen. Our technology is already there to do this, after all. It’s more a case of the money catching the technology up (this is going to get quite expensive to say the least…).

4) Loss of languages: this is already happening. In the last 100 years plenty of languages have either fallen by the wayside or become less used. In the future we can expect to speak English, Spanish and Mandarin apparently, and from where we are sitting that looks about right!

5) The United States will disband: California has long aired its views that it would prefer to remain on its own than a part of the US. So this one looks highly likely. Don’t expect it in the next 10 years but don’t be surprised if there is more talk of this!

Arguably, we are about to witness an increasing demand for Apple’s iOS because of its innovative structure, content, well designed menus and so on. However, objectively speaking, there is another OS that might actually conquer the world of technology simply because it would be more reliable, it would be more supported, more spread on devices and more likely to be evolving fast and progressively. And this is the Windows Phone platform which is already running on devices such as Samsung, HTC and Nokia.

The Windows Phone operating system is proven to be very stable and well performing. This is why it can expand to different brands. And while Apple’s iOS is available on solely Apple products, Windows Phone is installed in various devices including the hardware giants Nokia that deliver the most satisfactory hardware performance on the mobile market. Additionally, just like the large format print materials, but live, the Windows Phone interface interacts more successfully with the customer, allows him to simply look at his phone and obtain information through the live tiles of the menu. This is also a perfect opportunity to conduct multitasking by allowing the access of information to your other activities. This is how you can follow your emails, the news and the developments in your social media account at once - something that not many OS offer.

Also, the Windows system creates a whole new in-phone environment, an eco system as Microsoft described it. So you have gaming hubs, stores, social media and account settings and you can manage all of that both online and on the device. Thus your information is stored or used directly from a remote server, communication with others is very easy and simple and playing games and purchasing apps has never been easier.

Another phone giant, Nokia, has recently joined the Windows Phone family. This is just another proof of the fact that the software system is expanding and it yet to become the leader in mobile software industry.

Broadband – where would we be without it? As a global community, humanity has become so interconnected online that there are now more satellites pointing down at us then there are pointing out to space watching the stars. In fact an article reported by the BBC in January, reveals plans by Canada to shoot another 78 small satellites into orbit to help support the large models in handling all of the internet traffic. We truly live in a digital age.

One of the many reasons for these extra satellites is to enable you to get access to the internet on your mobile overseas. The amount of data use by travellers across the globe has risen exponentially in the past five years and many broadband companies have resorted to restricting the amount of data space people can use. It’s hardly surprising then that more satellites are being planned. However, this does raise an issue that many gadget lovers and consumers may not be to comfortable with.

In order to take advantage of the fastest broadband whilst travelling, you do need to have the best possible phone to handle it. Nine times out of ten this means investing in a smartphone. Love them or loathe them, they have become an essential part of the industry and amongst the very few models who can handle the speeds and data required for the best broadband use. There are many to choose from and whilst this reviewer was sceptical at first, I did eventually invest in an HTC. They are superior to an iPhone as you don’t experience any compatibility issues with software and downloads.

The Digital Future seems to be already here in the present, and like it or not the smartphone era is here.

The hysteria around the newest Windows promises to be complete. After much considerations on the interface, more of which were fictional and comparative as to the nature of Mac and Windows, the people from Microsoft finally presented their product last week on a special exposition organized by the company. The shock, however, is complete when the interface turned out to be something so revolutionary that we, the users, can just predict the future of technology.

The era of tablets is coming quickly and progressively and this is the reason why the age of mobile computing would require advanced software. Exactly this is what windows are aiming to show. Much has been though of the Windows 8 platform and it was always expected it would be a more advanced version of Windows 7 - however, the shock was complete when the presentation revealed a rather different product - the new software by Microsoft would look more like the Windows 7 Mobile used for tablet computing.

With this move Microsoft makes a clear statement - mobile computing is the next stage of computer evolution. After desktop computers, after laptops and smartphones, the ultimate computing tool would be tablets. No matter whether you are interested in browsing the latest English teaching jobs or looking for a good prospectus of a university course, the tablet computing would be subordinated entirely to your needs. Thus Windows 8 would be addressing these mobile computing demands with advanced interface and quite strong software features. Apparently, the Microsoft people are not out of the competition with Android and Apple’s Mac.

The Samsung Series 9 Super Slim Laptop has hit the market recently. Though the price of the laptop is somewhat high ($1599/-), it is still lower than the cost of military insurance, and its performance and specifications justify the price.

This laptop has a 13.3 inch display with Super-Bright Plus which goes to make this laptop the perfect for use. Besides this, it has a high processing power (second generation of Intel Core i5 M Processor). Both the display and the look of the laptop are going to keep you and your friends busy for a long time to come. It is made out of Duralumin (which is the same material that is used for making airplanes) and thus is much lighter but stronger than the average laptop. Over and above, the laptop is slim as it is just 0.64 inch.

The Super-Bright Plus display has 400-nit brightness. The LED-backlit screen with its 100,000:1 contrast ratio adds to the picture quality. Besides it has a highly beneficial 160-degree viewing angle. The laptop also has an ambient light sensor for adjusting the brightness automatically in accordance with the lighting condition that emanates from the surrounding areas.

It also features 4GB of RAM and comes with 128GB SSD memory (this is somewhat less for storage) but it is great for performance. The 13.3-inch model runs with Windows 7 Home Premium which looks amazing and wonderful if an Intel HD GT2 graphic card is added to it. Another useful feature is its longer battery life (up to 6.5 hours).

The battery has dual charging methods: (i) The Battery Life Extender Mode which makes the battery last longer, but it also requires a longer recharging time and the (ii) Express Charging Mode which recharges the laptop at a comparatively faster speed, but is not good for the battery life.

Rated the most powerful gaming laptop, Alienware M15x was just released by the Dell owned company. Truly, it is one of the most powerful gaming combinations ever made and is among the most desired gaming laptops for people as the experience it provides is amazing. The price, amounting to some 735 pounds is not that shocking if the machine is compared to a standard Macbook. After all, it is in times more powerful and compatible with almost any game you can possible think of.

The stunning i7 processor by Intel is just the beginning of a gaming experience. The improved processing speed and the advanced technology allow up to 8MB of cache. Additionally, the speed of a single core is mounting to some 2.13 GHz making this machine absolutely amazing.

No need to worry about graphics anymore. With its 1024 MB of operating memory, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX video card ensures smoothness while playing even the latest games for computers. And this is important since everyone experiences problems with computers running high speed games. In contrast with video consoles, PC games have no set up standards and incorporated technology that makes producers comply with the specifications of the machine. Rather, every game is for itself. This is why graphics might be a problem and this is why Alienware have made their laptop absolutely perfect in terms of graphic performance.

8GB of Ram is also there to make you happy. Your abilities with this RAM memory equal to something like playing 7 million strike solitaire games at once. What more can you want from a laptop?

The times of Star Trek and Star Wars have not yet come to existance. But whoever wrote the scripts for these masterpieces must have been a technological prophet. The amazing full 3D interactive conversations between people on different planet might now be absolutely possible - for engineers from different countries and locations (only because we are still roaming around our own planet and compare worldwide roaming fees from country to country and not from a planet to planet).

The conference room that the people from AOL are thinking of developing would be an expensive but quite innovative pleasure for its engineers. The room would be like a mini lab with super fast computers, absolutely stunning video capturing modes and perfect motion deterctors. Additionally, the ’cube’technology, which looks more like a cylinder, would display people in their full, a person would be able to go around them as if they are standing in the room and would be able to show them documentation without even sending a file.

Holograms are quite impossible to incorporate at this stage. Buth the cylinder technology looks quite real. 12 cameras around the oval conference room would capture the body from every angle in an absolutely amazing video resolution. The signel is then worked through specific computer systems which would show a complete image of the person with every detail from his body, shape and clothing. AOL said this might give a fresh start in the communication technologies, and might easily become a preferred method of communicating in the next 10 years. One thing is for sure, we would stalk the boss quite well even if he is in Hawaii.

How successfully have people been able to shift from desktop usage to netbook or any other portable form of computing? It has worked quite successfully. Tons of work applications are being sold for netbooks, profits are up, people are happy and satisfied, but here’s my view on whats missing.
Comfort is one key reason for buying desktop, storage would be the second and last but not the least, work friendly user interface. For a netbook, first of you need to install a hundred applications
(which would cost you more than 300 pounds) before you can properly use it for working environment - all that comes pre-installed in all PC’s. The comfort of sitting in a chair and working on a desktop cannot be compared to a small screen with you leaning over and squinting you eyes as well as multi-tasking on a tiny screen. The interface of a PC is well defined and flexible where as for a portable, even a mobile phone, you cannot put 2 explorers side by side and read or compare 2 documents with each other. You cannot save important files on desktop and easily access them when immediately needed - you’d have to hunt it out on a netbook. The limited storage of a netbook will force you carry extra storage devices with you wherever you go however, for stationary users, all they have to do is take relavent information on a pen drive and plug it into another nearby PC when needed. Thats, the whole point of staying stationary - to avoid constant movement.
So just in case you need to go to the auberge de jeunesse Amsterdam and stay there and move around for work reasons, all you need is a pen drive, then you can put that in to another PC there.
